Alice Handel sold her first batches of ice cream out of her husband’s gas station in 1945; she prepared that ice cream with old-fashioned recipes and fruit she picked from her own backyard. Handel’s Ice Cream Store has grown substantially from those humble beginnings, opening locations across the country, expanding its menu to 100 flavors of ice cream and yogurt, and garnering attention from USA Today and People magazine. Today, you can get a scoop of butter-toffee or key-lime-pie ice cream or chocolate-peanut-butter yogurt, all made with the same dedication and attention to detail that Alice first employed.
